As a 'just for fun' project I tried some
aerial photography. The plane was a 80" Cub with a .90 4/stroke.
The Camera is a basic Vivitar 35 mm fixed focus with auto film advance.
I think it was around $19.00 at a local WalMart. As you can see all it
took was a servo and a few rubber bands to set it up.
The camera is mounted on a piece of wood
that has a plastic baggie looped up. The bag went under the wing
before the wing was bolted down, the servo was connected to an open channel
and the plane went up. I placed the camera on the side of the plane so
that there would be a reference to see (the wing tip) and it avoided the
straight down shots we see. I guess that's my only artistic addition
to this very basic trial.
Because of the simplicity of the set up I
found that I needed to set the 'flash' on because when the plane was up I
couldn't tell if the servo actually tripped the shutter. It's a bit
odd to see your plane 'flash' while it's up there.
There are obvious downsides to this setup,
but for a goof project it was fun. My next one will be a digital
camera and a laptop at the field to download the shots upon landing. |
